Senior Project Update #4

I'm proud of my work on this project. Anytime I would sit down and work on it over the past month I felt like I was making a positive contribution to my community; I think that's a great way to feel about a senior project. I was able to create a detailed report and presentation, which is what I originally set out to do. I am also preparing to present the results to the administration and have been meeting regularly with ARC members to prepare. Overall, I think this project was a good choice for me. I don't think I would necessarily recommend this project to others. I think I felt like I had unfinished business with this survey analysis, which is what drew me towards working on it. However, other people might not have the same motivation. I also think it would've been valuable for me to have more structure with this project. While I was able to fill my time with volunteering, coaching and playing squash, and working at Chipotle, I still wished I had more to do in terms...

Senior Project Update #3

This week I finished my report and I'm now really excited to get started on my presentation for senior projects and for my meeting with the administration. This week I was actually also able to get together with a friend to work on our projects together and that was a great experience. It definitely made me feel less alone and kept me focused and productive. So far I have continued to learn about the process of writing a report like this. In my last post, I noticed a couple comments wondering about the information I've learned so far from my survey, so here is an analysis of one of the most interesting questions on the survey: " The majority of what I learned about race, racism, and antiracism came from Catlin Gabel." Nearly 60% of respondents answered either “Neutral/not sure”, “I somewhat disagree”, or “I disagree”. Less than 20% of respondents answered with “I agree” This indicates a large area of growth in education around race, racism, and antiracism in the Catli...

Senior Project Update #2

This week I went to Bend with my family for my birthday. There, I was able to work on my survey analysis in a new environment and get insight from my family. My favorite memory was showing the survey analysis to my brother, who surprised me by coming home from college for my birthday. He was so excited to see my work and impressed by the depth of the survey I had conducted. He also gave me some recommendations on what to include in my report, which was helpful since I felt a little bit stuck this week. I have learned a lot about how students actually feel about race and ethnicity on campus. While there have been varying opinions and some criticism of the survey itself, I've been most interested by the sheer number of ideas that students have for how we can improve. I've worked on summarizing all of the qualitative data and have found a great list of topics we can cover better in the curriculum, races that could be better represented, and generally questions that I can easily pa...

Senior Project Update #1

For my senior project, I have elected to analyze the data from a survey conducted by Catlin Gabel ARC (Antiracism Collective) earlier this year. This survey focused on race and ethnicity at Catlin and had over 30 questions (multiple choice and free response), gauging over 270 responses from the Upper School students who received it. For this project, I am working with a few members of ARC who helped me conduct the survey in February. I will use their help to present my analysis/report/presentation to Aline, John, and Jasmine. I have already picked out a date and time for this meeting.  ARC has been a very important part of my life this year. Combining social justice with a grassroots student movement on campus has been an amazing experience for me, and one that I'd love for future Catlin Gabel students to have. This year especially has highlighted the importance of social justice involvement for youth and the change that we can make. I've been inspired by the energy of my gen...
